Type 2 diabetes is the eventual outcome of poor insulin production in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar – the main type of sugar found in blood. Within this regulating mechanism, blood sugar levels shoot up, which in turn causes a plethora of problems.
Fortunately, you can enhance your supply of insulin – and subsequently regulate blood sugar – by making healthy lifestyle decisions.
One promising intervention is to drink pomegranate juice.
A study published in the Current Developments in Nutrition journal examined the impact of consuming a single dose of eight-ounce pomegranate juice on blood sugar levels.
Twenty one healthy, normal weight individuals were recruited.
Volunteers were randomly assigned to take a single dose of water, pomegranate juice, or water with 18.6 grams of glucose and 18.3 grams of fructose to match pomegranate juice sugar content.
Fasting blood sugar was collected before, and at 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 minutes after the drink.
Fasting blood sugar test measures your blood sugar after an overnight fast (not eating).
In all subjects, water intake did not change the levels of blood sugar.

However, In healthy subjects with low insulin levels, “significant” lower glucose at 15 minutes and and 30 minutes were observed after pomegranate juice compared to sugar water intake, the researchers observed.
What’s more, significant higher insulin levels at 15 and 30 minutes were observed after drinking pomegranate juice compared to sugar water.
Research elsewhere has confirmed the benefits of drinking pomegranate juice.
A study conducted in Israel revealed that pomegranate juice could provide additional benefits for diabetics.
The juice was trialed on a small human study group at the Rappaport Family Institute for Research in the Medical Sciences, in conjunction with the Ramban Medical Centre in Haifa, Israel. T
The key finding was that the sugars found in pomegranate juice, although similar in property to other fruit juice sugars, did not negatively influence diabetes parameters.
The juice was even found to lower the risk of atherosclerosis – a potentially serious condition whereby arteries become clogged with fatty substances called plaques, or atheroma.
Type 2 diabetes – symptoms to spot
Many people have type 2 diabetes without realising. This is because symptoms do not necessarily make you feel unwell.
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes include:
- Peeing more than usual, particularly at night
- Feeling thirsty all the time
- Feeling very tired
- Losing weight without trying to
- Itching around your penis or vagina, or repeatedly getting thrush
- Cuts or wounds taking longer to heal
- Blurred vision.
According to the NHS, you should see a GP if you have any of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes or you’re worried you may have a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes.
“You’ll need a blood test, which you may have to go to your local health centre for if it cannot be done at your GP surgery,” explained the health body.
