Drinking coffee could aid weight loss – expert shares advice

Coffee is a popular drink enjoyed by millions of people in the UK every day.

While many consume the caffeinated beverage as a way to boost energy levels in the morning there are some reported health benefits.

David Wiener, training and nutrition specialist at Freeletics, spoke with Express.co.uk about how coffee could aid weight loss.

He said: “Some research has proven that caffeine could increase your metabolic rate by around three to 11 percent, and the higher your metabolic rate is, the easier it can be for you to burn fat, and therefore lose weight.

“However, you are not going to lose weight by this alone. With any weight loss plan, you need to incorporate cardiovascular exercise, strength training and eating a healthy, nutritious diet to be able to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.”

One study, published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, analysed 13 existing trials looking at the link between coffee consumption and weight loss in more than 600 participants.

The more caffeine that was consumed, the greater the reduction in body mass index, fat mass and weight there was.

“Overall, the current meta-analysis demonstrated that caffeine intake might promote weight, body mass index and body fat reduction,” it concluded.

However, Mr Wiener warned that in some cases the effect of caffeine on sleep could actually have the opposite effect.

“There has also been some research into caffeine and the effects it has on weight gain, with some proving caffeine drinkers to have a higher body mass index and having trouble sleeping, and with weight loss, sleep is one of the most important factors to ensure weight loss results,” he said.

“Considering the mixed research into caffeine and weight loss, and there being no conclusive answer, you should just enjoy coffee if it suits you and your lifestyle.

“If you’re not a caffeine drinker, there is no point picking up a caffeine habit in the hopes it will make you lose weight.”

Is it OK to drink coffee every day?

He commented: “Drinking coffee every day shouldn’t be a problem if you’re trying to lose weight, as long as you are incorporating enough exercise and nutritious meals into your day too.

“Everything in moderation is always essential in any weight loss journey, so it’s fine to have a normal cup of coffee every day.

“However, if you have some sort of heart condition, I wouldn’t recommend drinking coffee every day, since it can increase your blood pressure.”

How much coffee is safe?

Mr Weiner warned that too much caffeine could have a negative effect.

“If you’re trying to lose weight, you should drink as much coffee as you normally would, as long as it doesn’t exceed the recommended limit of 400mg of caffeine, or this could result in adverse effects, and could be detrimental to your health,” he advised.

“However, it’s important to remember that coffee isn’t the only source of caffeine, and you could be consuming it through teas, energy drinks, and sodas without even realising.”

What’s the best type of coffee to drink?

If you’re looking to lose weight it’s important not to add any potentially calorie-rich extras to coffee.

He said: “The best type of coffee for weight loss is the coffee without added cream, sugar, syrups, and so on.

“In fact, adding too much of these could counteract the coffee’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

“Opting for sugar-free syrups, lower fat milk, and natural sugar alternatives would be the best types of coffees to help you lose weight alongside a healthy, balanced diet. Just don’t rely on coffee to be the basis of your weight loss regime.”
