Everyone wants to know the secret to living a long and happy life, whether that’s eating your five a day or making sure you drink water and get an hour’s exercise. To gain a deeper understanding of what could lead to an individual living a longer life, a study analysed what people were searching for on the internet the most in the countries with the greatest life expectancy. Revealing possible health trends that could be the answer to living longer. What country has the longest lifespan and what habits do they adopt to help boost longevity.

According to the study by Bequests, Hong Kong has the highest life expectancy with an average age of 84.7 years.

When it comes to the highest google searches for the region including habits formed to boost their longevity, both listening to music and practising yoga were tops.

Listening to music

A collaboration between O2 and Goldsmiths University revealed the pleasurable experience of listening to music can extend your lifespan.

Investigated by Goldsmiths University’s lecturer Patrick Fagan found that regularly listening to music can prolong your life expectancy.

The study reported that 20 minutes of listening to music can lead up to a 21 percent increase in that feeling of well-being”.

Professor Fargan insisted said: “Our research showcases the profound impact listening to music or going to gigs have on feelings of health, happiness and well-being – with regular attendance being the key.”

The study involved participants partaking in “psychometric testing and heart rate tests” while attending concerts, doing yoga and dog-walking.

The data revealed that those who attended gigs or listened to music at home had an increased sense of self-worth by 25 percent.


Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India.

It involves breathing exercises, meditation and poses which are designed to encourage relaxation as well as reduce stress.

One study found participants over 40 years of age who practiced yoga for five years had a lower blood pressure and pulse rate than those who didn’t helping to boost longevity in the long run.

Research has also demonstrated incorporating yoga into a healthy lifestyle could help slow the progression of heart disease.

The study also revealed other habits which should be incorporated to boost longevity which include:

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables every day. 
  • Eat more whole grains. 
  • Include more foods from the seas and lakes. 
  • Choose high-quality meat – but eat less meat overall. 
  • Seek out more food from wild landscapes. 
  • Use organic produce whenever possible. 
  • Avoid food additives. 
  • Base more meals on seasonal produce. 
  • Consume more home-cooked food. 
  • Produce less waste.
